Preparing to Nurse
Breast
Changes
You may have noticed some enlargement of your
breasts. They can grow up to 4 times pre-pregnant
size.
Size does not determine the amount of milk you will make. The size of the breast is related to the amount of fatty tissue
in your breasts.
You may have notice “pimple looking” bumps on
areola, those are called Montgomery glands. they help to clean the nipples. When washing you do not want to clog those, so only use water to wash with. Do not use soap or lotion
on your nipples.
You may have noticed your areola has darkened. It does that to become a “target” for baby. The can actually see it better and it can help
them to attach.
You may have noticed some tenderness. Your breasts
may feel very sensitive and tender. This is normal.
You may have noticed your nipples drying and
crusting. This is normal and helps to prevent soreness, do not rub
nipples to “toughen”, it removes the natural keratin layer that will
help with soreness and it may cause premature contractions. If you
are uncomfortable from the dryness, you may use Lansinoh or Purelan
on your nipples.
Bras
If you are not comfortable
wearing a bra, you do NOT have to. It can help with support and when
the milk volume increases which can help prevent engorgement.
There are many types and many brands of nursing bras
available. The most important thing to consider when purchasing
a nursing bra is to make sure it fits well. If you MUST wear an underwire bra, watch for plugged ducts
and make sure it is well fitted. Buy
one or two in the last month of pregnancy and get one size larger
than you are. After about two to three weeks you can get more and
will remain about that size. Sleep bras are comfortable for nursing and prevent leaking at
night. There are also newer products that help you to not need a bra
at night. (Fitted nursing gowns and
Lily Padz)
Nursing
Pads
Disposable nursing pads can be purchased at most stores that
have baby supplies. There are also washable nursing pads that are
more economical. They can be washed and reused. There are
wool pads, that even though it may sound itching
and uncomfortable, I tried these with my 3rd child and actually
really like them. They do not have to be washed as often and contain
natural lanolin. Lily Padz are other options. They are fairly new and I have
heard very good reports from women using
these.
